Commission Approves Contract for Terminal Project

The project to build a new general aviation terminal building at the Flagler Executive Airport is ready to take off after county commissioners approved a contract with Sauer Construction to build the facility.

According to a county staff report, the existing 6,400-square foot terminal is approximately 40 years old and will be replaced by a 15,500-square foot building to house the airport administration offices, as well as public space, meeting space and other space available for lease to small-business tenants.

“Flagler Executive Airport is an economic engine for the county and it also serves as the gateway to Flagler County and the communities it serves,” the report states. “This general aviation terminal facility is the next step in the evolution of transforming the airport into a premier location for businesses looking to locate at the airport and in its surrounding communities.”

The budget for the construction project was set at $12 million. Sauer Construction’s bid was $9.6 million, which will allow the county to include roundabout road tie-ins in the project. The total cost for the project is $10.2 million. Ninety percent of the construction costs will be covered by a Public Transportation Grant Agreement from the Florida Department of Transportation and a legislative appropriation from the state.

Other companies bidding on the project included Coleman Goodemote, Collage Companies, M.H. Williams, ABBA, H.A. Contracting and Gray Construction.

According to Hoyle Tanner, the county’s consulting company for the project, Sauer Construction has experience in aviation-related construction projects, with a recently completed airport terminal renovation job in Georgia and a design-build contract for security upgrades at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina..

“Hoyle Tanner reached out to the references provided by Sauer Construction,” according to a letter included in the staff report. “All of the references contacted had extremely positive experiences and would not hesitate to work with Sauer Construction again.”
