Did You Know Americans are Making More Beer and Wine?

Beer and wine are among the most popular alcoholic beverages in the United States, with beer topping the list. And Americans are making more beer and wine these days, but at the same time they are buying less of their favorite adult beverages.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest Annual Business Survey, the number of breweries and wineries in the United States increased every year between 2017 and 2020. In that time, the number of breweries surpassed the number of wineries, sparked by the emergence of the craft beer movement.

While the increase in variety and diversity of beer and wine gives consumers and connoisseurs more options, Americans are buying less of both.

The Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Manufactures noted a decline in sales of beer and wine of nearly $5 billion annually since 2017 while payrolls increased by a quarter million dollars.
