Did You Know Florida has an Office of Ocean Economy?
Tucked away in a wide-ranging education bill signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis is a measure that aims to boost Sunshine State businesses along the state’s miles of shoreline.
The newly established Office of Ocean Economy aims to develop and support research, innovation and strategies for expanding seaside industries across Florida.
According to a media release, the new agency will assist a range of businesses – including shipyards, piers, fishing and aquaculture enterprises, cruise lines, commercial diving operations, marine transport businesses and outdoor recreation industries – boost profits and promote sustainable environments.
The Office of Ocean Economy will also partner with state and private colleges and universities to encourage academic research on the ocean economy and promote Florida as a premier destination for ocean-related economic and educational interests.
Beginning in August 2025, the agency will release a report on job growth, wages, labor shortages and strategies for economic growth and policies for the ocean economy in the state.
