Flagler Unemployment Jumps to 4.2%

Flagler County’s June 2024 unemployment rate jumped to 4.2%, an increase from May’s 3.6% unemployment rate, according to the June 2024 data release from Florida Commerce.
“Flagler’s unemployment rate is at its highest level since October 2021,” said Greg Blosé, President & CEO, Palm Coast-Flagler Regional Chamber of Commerce. “The increase in unemployment is concerning because it occurred during the usually busy summer hiring season. Earlier this year, the unemployment rate hovered at 4.1%, before declining to 3.6% in May 2024.”
Blose continued, “Flagler County’s 4.2% unemployment rate indicates a slowdown in hiring and more residents standing in the unemployment line looking for work. In previous years, we expect the unemployment rate to decline at this time of year due to summer tourism hiring. This year, economic uncertainty is higher, likely due to the upcoming Presidential Election and macro-economic trends, such as inflation.”
The number of Flagler County residents that are employed (either working in this county or another county) decreased from 49,540 in May 2024 to 49,461 in June 2024, a decrease of 79 residents.
The number of unemployed job-seeking residents in Flagler County increased, measuring 2,149 in June 2024, up from 1,834 in May 2024, a decrease of 315 residents from last month’s report.
The Flagler County labor force is reported at 51,610 residents.
