Florida Museum of Black History Foundation Formed
The Foundation for the Museum of Black History has been formed to support the creation of the museum to be established in St. Augustine/St. Johns County, according to a media release.
The museum will offer a comprehensive exploration of the contributions of African Americans throughout Florida’s state-wide regions, from the arts and politics to education, entrepreneurship, and more, the release states.
“Florida’s Black history is American history,” said Howard Holley a former member of the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force and a co-founder of the Foundation, in the release. “We’re thrilled to be bringing this vision to life while we are also well aware of the journey.”
The Foundation invites community members to contribute to this vision by volunteering, advocating and communicating in support of policies and awareness that will ensure the museum’s ongoing success and accessibility for all. Through exhibits, educational programs, and community engagement, the museum will stand as a testament to the strength and resilience of a community that helped define Florida’s cultural and historical identity. “We are excited to be part of creating a space that honors the powerful legacy of Black history in Florida,” said Foundation Executive Director Alesia Wilbekin in the release.” This museum will be a place where history is celebrated, stories are shared, and future generations are inspired to continue the work of building a more inclusive and equitable community.”
