Palm Coast Community Unites for Candlelight Memorial Honoring 9/11 Heroes and Victims

The Palm Coast Fire Department held a moving Candlelight Memorial on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Although the event was originally planned for Heroes Memorial Park, inclement weather prompted a shift to Fire Station 21 at 9 Corporate Drive.

Deputy Fire Chief Bradd Clark served as the Master of Ceremonies, guiding the heartfelt program. The Palm Coast Fire Department Honor Guard presented the nation’s colors, and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Commander, Kenny Goncalves, delivered a powerful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. Rabbi Karen Tashman of Temple Beth Shalom opened the ceremony with a poignant invocation.

Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin and Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill delivered remarks, reflecting on the enduring impact of September 11th and the importance of community unity in remembrance of the lives lost.

The ceremony closed with the solemn sounding of the Firefighter Memorial Bell by Chaplain Chris Cottle, followed by a candle lighting ceremony led by Chief Berryhill, Sheriff Rick Staly, and Mayor Alfin. Reverend Jose Panthaplamthottiyil of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church gave the benediction, bringing the event to a reverent conclusion.

Mayor Alfin emphasized the importance of the memorial, stating, “This service provides an opportunity for our community to come together and show our enduring respect for the heroes and victims of that fateful day.”

The gathering was a solemn reminder of the lasting significance of September 11th, and the Palm Coast community stood united in tribute to the victims, first responders, and all those affected by the tragic events of that day.
