Sustainability Efforts Keep Volusia in the Green
“Sustainability” is more than a keyword in a strategic plan for Volusia County officials. It is an active effort.
“In Volusia County, sustainability means balancing economic growth, environmental stewardship and community well-being,” said Clayton Jackson, Volusia County public information officer. “We strive to create policies and practices that support smart development while preserving natural resources and enhancing residents’ quality of life. This approach encompasses conserving natural environments, promoting energy efficiency and ensuring equitable access to services. By integrating these elements, we aim to ensure that the resources we enjoy today remain available for future generations, making Volusia County a vibrant and resilient community.”
Jackson said sustainability is an important part of the county’s efforts to grow the local economy and attract new business development.
“Our economic development strategy emphasizes supporting existing and new businesses in a way that fosters long-term growth and stability without compromising our environmental or social standards,” he said. “We are keen on attracting diverse industries that offer substantial employment opportunities and contribute positively to our local economy. By focusing on broad-based economic development, we aim to create a robust local economy that is resilient and capable of supporting a thriving community.
Volusia County’s sustainability policies also include specific projects and programs, including an active land purchase effort.
“Volusia County actively invests in sustainability through various initiatives, with Volusia Forever being a central program,” Jackson said. “This voter-approved initiative focuses on acquiring and managing environmentally sensitive lands to preserve their ecological value, protect water resources and provide outdoor recreational opportunities.”
Jackson said the amount of land preserved as a result of those efforts exceeds the total size of neighboring Seminole County and “offers a significant perspective on our commitment to conversation.”
As a coastal county and a tourist destination, sustainability efforts in Volusia also focus on the county’s beaches.
“Sustainability for our beaches and tourism assets involves a proactive approach to preserving their natural beauty and accessibility, ensuring they continue as vital contributors to our local, regional and state economies,” Jackson said. “This commitment includes efforts to protect our coastal ecosystems through strategic partnerships and initiatives, such as our upcoming sand placement projects in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The projects, anticipated to start in March, are being funded by a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. This will be essential not only for preventing erosion and protecting both private and public properties but also for maintaining the habitats of our marine wildlife. Our strategy effectively balances the need for environmental stewardship with our goal to offer a welcoming experience to all visitors, enhancing both ecological health and resident and tourist satisfaction.”
