There is an IBM TV commercial for WatsonX, their AI platform, that starts with “Some people are excited about what AI can do for them. We’re excited about what AI can do for business.”

At EVOLVE, we are also excited about what AI can do for business. Our EVOLVE Editorial Advisory Boards selected Artificial Intelligence as the theme for both the First Coast Region and the Greater Daytona Region Fall Issues. And for good reason…. It’s a topic of conversation everywhere!

Oxford Dictionary defines artificial intelligence as “The capacity of computers or other machines to exhibit or simulate intelligent behavior. Abbreviated AI.”

We wanted to examine AI in business: how it is currently being used, as well as plans for its use in the future. We talked to small businesses, healthcare systems, tourism organizations, service organizations and educational institutions about how AI is impacting their organization’s goals. We also conducted a survey of some of our readers to gauge how they viewed AI. You can see the survey results here .

AI has had an overwhelming and exponential benefit on our lives thus far, and many have not been very aware of its impact. With the launch of ChatGPT last year, all eyes were on AI and that awareness heightened. Accompanying the increased awareness has been a fear of the unintended consequences. While privacy and deep fakes are real concerns, figuring out how to implement AI in a manner that maximizes its benefit to our business goals while yielding value to our customers will be critical.

Barbara and I were in New York City last month, and on a visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), we were mesmerized by an exhibit that constantly changed in form, shape, and colors. What we learned later was that it was an AI rendering through a complex machine learning model created by the Refik Anadol Studio. Refik said that if you looked at it FOREVER, you would never see the same images. A special thanks to Paul Breitenbach, CEO of R4 Technologies, for his forward thoughts about AI in The Road Ahead.

We hope you enjoy this issue of EVOLVE and the AI-generated article.

The world is changing! And as business leaders/owners, we need to be prepared to change as well!!
